Starting an internet radio station involves several steps. Here’s a general guide to help you get started:

  • If you are on a tight budget you might want to look at look at the FFINE and or FDUCE line of microphones.

  • Select broadcasting software such as RadioDJ, SAM Broadcaster, or others. This software helps you manage playlists, schedule shows, and go live. RadioDJ is free and extremely popular. SAM Broadcaster usually $299.00. Both of these are Windows based. There are other options as well.
  1. Secure Music Licensing:
  • If you plan to play copyrighted music, obtain the necessary licenses from performance rights organizations (PROs) or royalty-free music providers.
  • The main licensing agents are the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers(ASCAP), The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada(SoCan), Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), and SESAC (originally the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers), and SoundExchange, along with others.
  • If you are located in the United States, Canada, or the UK and host your station with Live365 they will cover royalties in those three countries as part of your monthly subscription cost.
  • There is also a service by the name of PRONETLicensing that handles the payment of royalties. If your station becomes very popular this may be the way to go though as mentioned early operating a legal station can be expensive.
  1. Create a Music Library:
  • Build a library of music and other content that aligns with your station’s theme. There are numerous sources from which you can purchase music. There are also companies out there that will produce voiceovers and station imaging for you. A source I use is Fiverr.
